The United Arab Emirates and France have taken another step in their longstanding defence relationship, exchanging a Strategic Defence Partnership Framework during French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Abu Dhabi on October 20.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Macron witnessed the exchange, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM). The announcement also included an agreement on implementation arrangements relating to the defence industry.
Who exchanged the documents?
Mohamed bin Mubarak Al Mazrouei, the UAE Minister of State for Defence Affairs, exchanged the framework with Catherine Vautrin, France’s Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs.
Separately, Nasser Humaid Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of Tawazun Council for Defence Enablement, and Patrick Pailloux, France’s Delegate-General for Armaments, exchanged the defence-industry implementation agreement.
Why does the agreement matter?
The framework signals an intention to deepen structured cooperation between two countries with established military and industrial ties. The separate industry document places defence manufacturing and implementation alongside wider security coordination.
However, the announcement did not disclose a full list of programmes, contract values or deployment commitments. Those details should not be inferred from the ceremony alone.
Industrial cooperation in focus
During the visit, the presidents toured Tawazun Industrial Park in Abu Dhabi, where they saw facilities linked to EDGE Group companies ADASI, EPI, HALCON and POWERTECH. The visit highlighted local advanced manufacturing and the infrastructure supporting defence and aerospace industries.
Wider diplomatic agenda
The leaders also discussed economic cooperation, energy, artificial intelligence and regional developments during the visit. Their talks covered maritime security and the impact of Middle East developments on energy supplies.
