Dubai has begun a four-week trial of Glydways, an automated transport system that uses small autonomous electric vehicles on dedicated guideways at Bluewaters. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) says the trial will test how the vehicles and their supporting systems perform in an operating environment before officials assess possible next steps.
The announcement is relevant to residents because the project is intended to explore new ways of connecting Metro stations with homes, business districts and visitor destinations. However, the Bluewaters trial should not be mistaken for a public transport service that is already open for everyday passenger bookings.
What is Dubai Glydways?
Glydways is designed around compact, driverless electric vehicles that travel on narrow, dedicated guideways rather than mixing with ordinary road traffic. According to RTA, each vehicle can carry four to six passengers, reach speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour and travel up to 250 kilometres on a single battery charge.
The vehicles use a combination of sensors, radar, high-definition cameras and autonomous-driving systems to monitor their surroundings and manage movement. The four-week trial is intended to evaluate technical performance, safety and reliability, communications and control systems, journey times, ease of use and the overall passenger experience.
Where is the trial taking place?
The current trial is taking place at Bluewaters in Dubai. RTA has described it as a testing phase, with Dubai Holding supporting the field-testing environment, infrastructure and operational arrangements.
The authority has also identified potential routes for further study. These include a proposed 2.8-kilometre connection between National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters, as well as possible links serving Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Business Bay and Mohammed Bin Rashid City.
These are routes under study, not confirmation that all of them have been approved, built or opened to passengers. Any future rollout will depend on the results of testing and subsequent decisions by the relevant authorities.
Can residents use the driverless pods now?
Residents should not assume they can book or ride the Glydways vehicles as part of the normal public transport network. The official announcement describes the operation as a four-week trial and does not announce public fares, a passenger booking process or a date for commercial launch.
For now, anyone planning a journey should continue to check the existing RTA transport options and official service updates. If the authority announces public access or a wider rollout, those details should be confirmed through its official channels.
What could the system mean for Dubai transport?
The project is focused in part on “first- and last-mile” travel: the short connection between a passenger’s home or destination and a larger transport hub such as a Metro station. If future routes are approved and prove practical, this type of service could offer another way to connect selected residential, commercial and tourism areas with the wider network.
RTA says the system is designed for on-demand, point-to-point travel and can be expanded according to demand. It has also published projected capacity and cost comparisons for the technology. Those figures are design claims, however, and should not be treated as measured results from the Bluewaters trial; the trial is intended to generate operational data for future assessment.
What happens next?
The trial is scheduled to run for four weeks. RTA says the findings will help it assess the system’s safety, reliability, operating performance and potential integration with Dubai’s public transport network. A wider launch, final routes, public fares and passenger eligibility have not been confirmed in the announcement.
GulfInside will update this report if RTA publishes new details about public access, routes or the next stage of the project.
