By GulfInside | United States | Updated October 20, 2026. The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 on October 14. The increase applies to Social Security retirement, disability and survivor benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). It is confirmed, not a forecast. Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the increase in January 2027; increased SSI payments for about 7.3 million recipients begin December 31, 2026. Some people receive both programs. Official SSA announcement.
How much will Social Security checks increase in 2027?
SSA estimates the average monthly retirement benefit will rise from $2,095 to $2,170, a $75 increase. These are estimated averages, not a guarantee of an individual’s payment. Actual increases depend on benefit history and any deductions, including Medicare premiums.

SSI maximum federal payment in 2027
The maximum federal SSI payment standard increases from $994 to $1,029 a month for an eligible individual and from $1,491 to $1,544 for an eligible couple. These are maximum federal amounts; countable income and living arrangements may reduce an individual’s payment, while some states supplement SSI. Resource limits remain $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. SSA SSI rate calculations.
When will the 2027 COLA arrive?
Social Security benefits increased for December 2026 are generally paid in January 2027 according to each beneficiary’s payment schedule. The January SSI benefit is issued on December 31, 2026 because January 1 is a federal holiday. That early payment is not an extra benefit.
