The Hermès Kelly
The Hermès Kelly is one of the fashion house’s oldest lines. It’s older than the more popular Hermès Birkin.
The bag was created in 1935 by Émile Hermès’ son-in-law, Robert Dumas, and was initially called Sac à Dépêche or messenger bag. It is a trapezoid-shaped leather bag with triangular gussets and four studded feet at the bottom, one for each corner. It has a cut-out flap, a single handle and a detachable strap for easy wearing.
The bag shot to fame when Her Serene Highness Grace Kelly, the Hollywood sweetheart turned Princess of Monaco, was photographed holding an Hermès Sac à Dépêche against her stomach, presumably to shield her slight baby bump from prying eyes. It was then that Hermès changed the bag name to Kelly.
