PESHAWAR, October 19, 2026: The collapse of a roof at the privately operated Al-Khair Education Center in Peshawar killed 34 children and a female teacher on October 15, according to Reuters reporting based on police, rescue and hospital officials.
At least 45 children were injured. Most received treatment and were discharged, while three were reported to be in critical condition in the immediate aftermath.
What investigators have said
Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed said the building had a weak structure and that construction placed excessive weight on the roof. The school’s owner was arrested, and an investigation was launched. Those findings are the police’s initial assessment, and the legal responsibility of individuals remains subject to due process.
Families demand accountability
The tragedy has devastated families and renewed questions about the condition and oversight of low-cost private educational buildings. Reuters reported that approximately 110 students were attending classes when the roof collapsed.
School safety audits
Authorities announced checks of similar school buildings to identify structural risks. The effectiveness of those audits will depend on inspections and follow-up action.
