Umrah, often described as the ‘lesser pilgrimage’ in Islam, holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. Unlike Hajj, which is one of the five pillars of Islam and has specific dates in the Islamic lunar calendar, Umrah can be undertaken at any time of the year. However, there is a distinct period when Umrah season commences following the completion of Hajj, and understanding this timing, along with the new digital procedures for undertaking this journey, is crucial for every potential pilgrim and all muslim Expats in Saudia living alone or with family.
Understanding Umrah and Its Distinction from Hajj
Umrah involves a series of ritual acts symbolic of the lives of Ibrahim (Abraham) and his second wife Hagar and is performed in the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. While Hajj is mandatory for every able Muslim once in their lifetime, Umrah is a Sunnah (recommended) act that can be performed multiple times. The rites of Umrah include Ihram (state of consecration), Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), and Sa’i (walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah).
Timing of Umrah Season
The Umrah season typically commences about a month after the end of Hajj. Hajj takes place in the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month of the lunar Islamic calendar. After Hajj concludes, the authorities often close the Grand Mosque for maintenance and cleaning. Umrah season begins once this is complete, usually in Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, and runs throughout the year until the start of the next Hajj season.
A Digital Leap in Managing Pilgrimages
The introduction of the “Nusuk App” by the Saudi Arabian government marks a significant digital advancement in managing the pilgrimage process. This app is an essential tool for pilgrims intending to perform Umrah, especially in the context of the recent global pandemic.

The Spiritual Essence of Umrah
Despite the procedural aspects, the essence of Umrah is deeply spiritual. It offers a time for reflection, prayer, and reconnecting with the divine. The act of performing Umrah is considered a purification of the soul and an opportunity to seek forgiveness and blessings from Allah. The experience of being in the holy city of Mecca, participating in the rituals performed by millions of Muslims for centuries, is a profound experience for every believer.
The Economic and Cultural Impact of Umrah
Umrah also plays an important role in the economy of Saudi Arabia. The year-round influx of pilgrims helps diversify the region’s economy, moving beyond oil dependence. Culturally, it facilitates a unique exchange between Muslims from different parts of the world, fostering a sense of global Islamic brotherhood.
